Weekend Format

Practice, Qualifying and Race Day

A Formula 1 weekend is normally divided into three stages: practice sessions, qualifying and the Grand Prix itself. Practice allows teams to test setups and gather information about tyre performance.

Qualifying determines the starting order for the race, with the fastest driver earning pole position. The race then decides the final classification and championship points allocation.

Starting Grid

Pole Position and Grid Penalties

The starting grid shows where each driver begins the race. Pole position belongs to the fastest driver in qualifying. However, penalties for incidents, technical infringements or power-unit changes can move drivers further back on the grid. Comparing starting positions with finishing positions often reveals which drivers gained the most ground during the race.

Points System

How Drivers Score Championship Points

Championship points are awarded to the top finishers in each Grand Prix. The winner receives the highest score, while lower finishing positions earn progressively fewer points. These points determine both the Drivers’ Championship and the Constructors’ Championship. Consistent scoring throughout the season is often more important than winning a single race.

Race Control

Flags, Safety Cars and Penalties

Race control uses different flag signals to manage on-track incidents and ensure safety. Yellow flags warn drivers about hazards ahead, while red flags suspend a session entirely. Safety Cars and Virtual Safety Cars may be deployed when conditions require the field to slow down. Time penalties and grid penalties can also affect the final classification.

Performance Systems Explained

DRS, or Drag Reduction System, helps drivers reduce aerodynamic drag and increase overtaking opportunities in designated zones. ERS, or Energy Recovery System, stores and deploys electrical energy generated during braking and engine operation. Together, these systems play an important role in modern Formula 1 strategy and race management.

Sprint Weekends

Additional Racing Before Sunday

Some Formula 1 events use a sprint format. Sprint weekends include an additional short race that takes place before the Grand Prix. Drivers can earn extra championship points, and sprint results may influence the competitive picture heading into the main race. Sprint weekends create more opportunities for action across the event schedule.
